Dr Hameed is a UK-based psychiatrist from an Iraqi-refugee
background. He graduated from medial college at Baghdad University
in 2002, then undertook 2 years of training in various
medical and surgical specialities in Baghdad before leaving Iraq in
2005 due to the war and its aftermath.
He worked as a general practitioner for 3
years in one of the most deprived areas in Yemen, where he acquired
invaluable clinical experience in the management of various
physical and mental health disorders. In 2010, he began
psychiatric training in the UK. He has been involved in the
diagnosis and treatment of people with autism spectrum disorder
since 2013, working with his consultant (and co-author of
this module), Dr Jacobus Hamelijnck.
In addition to his clinical work with
autism, Dr Hameed is involved in various research projects on the
epidemiology of mental illness and improving learning in clinical
settings. He is also active on social media to raise
awareness of mental health conditions.

After qualifying from the University of
Amsterdam in 1990, Dr Hamelijnck moved to North Wales to
complete his training as a general practitioner, and then in
psychiatry. He completed his specialist training in adult
psychiatry in 2001 and took on his first consultant post in
Lowestoft, Suffolk. Since then he has worked in the community and
on the in-patient unit in NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney.
Dr Hamelijnck established a specialist
clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of adults with autism
spectrum conditions, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions
in Lowestoft, Suffolk. He also established the first specialist
